Autonomous Driving Cars

Self Driving Autonomous Cars What are They and How do They Work ?

Autonomous driving cars, also known as self-driving cars or driverless cars, are vehicles that are capable of driving themselves without the need for human input. They use a combination of sensors, cameras, and advanced software algorithms to navigate roads, detect and respond to other vehicles and objects, and make decisions about how to drive.

The basic components of an autonomous car are:
  • Sensors: These include radar, lidar, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors, which are used to detect and measure the position and movement of objects around the car.
  • Control Unit: This is the "brain" of the autonomous car, that receives sensor data and using specialized software and algorithms, makes decisions on how the car should navigate on the road.
  • Actuation system: the system that control the physical movement of the vehicle like acceleration, braking, and steering.
There are different levels of autonomous driving that are commonly used to classify cars based on the amount of human input required:
  • Level 0: No autonomous capabilities.
  • Level 1: Driver Assistance, some basic automation like cruise control or lane-keeping.
  • Level 2: Partial Automation, vehicle can control acceleration, braking, and steering while the driver must still be in control and monitoring the road.
  • Level 3: Conditional Automation, the car can drive itself in certain conditions but the driver must be ready to take control when prompted.
  • Level 4: High Automation, the car can drive itself in most conditions but a human driver may need to take control in certain situations.
  • Level 5: Full Automation, the car can drive itself in all conditions, no human driver is required.
Currently most of the autonomous cars in production and testing are in level 2 and 3, the ones that can drive themselves in certain conditions but still need human supervision and ability to take over the drive.
The full automation (level 5) is still under heavy development and testing and not yet available for the public.
